Melburnians on the Afterlife

A Melburnian is someone from Melbourne.

Last week ministry candidates and some faculty from the Presbyterian Theological College (PTC) spent a week door-knocking and a speaking with people in the community about Jesus Christ. Jared Hood, a lecturer from the PTC, blogged what he found were the most common beliefs held.

  1. they are going to heaven – even the athiests;
  2. they get to heaven by being good;
  3. they have done bad, but the good outweighs the bad;
  4. that God agrees with their view of things.

These erroneous beliefs are nothing knew and won’t be surprising to many of you. However, it’s important that we’re reminded so we don’t neglect to clearly explain “the doctrines of the atonement, justification and assurance” as they “are still as vital and relevant as ever!”

Update: For those interested, Jared Hood has posted two other updates on the Mission Week he was involved in (here & here).

Is Christianity a Crutch?

…Greg Koukl says it is. He thinks Atheism is a crutch as well. The question he leaves his readers is this:

“We all need a crutch. The questions is, are you using a crutch that will hold you?”

As I considered this, my first thought was that I’d prefer to think of Christianity as a stretcher for a dead man rather than a crutch. Then I thought maybe a defibrillator that brings people back from the dead. I then ended with the thought that Christianity is more akin to a life-support machine. If the switch was flicked and I was no longer “connected” then I’d be without hope and would run head long into Hell.

I’m thankful not only for the work of Christ in His earthly ministry, but for His ongoing work now as He intercedes for me. Without the daily intercession of Christ my life-support machine would be turned off.

Metaphors are never perfect, but what are your thoughts? Is Christianity a crutch?

One Blasphemy Packed Paragraph

…courtesy of Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion:

The “psychotic” God of the Old Testament is “arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”

Sadly, Dawkins sounds like some Christians.

Video: Ray Comfort is an “Idiot”

In the following video Richard Dawkins kindly refers to Ray Comfort as an “idiot.” He also evades the question of what happened or existed before the “Big Bang” by stating that’s a question for “cosmologists” whereas he (Dawkins) is a “biologist.”

Update: If you’re having trouble viewing the video click here and watch it at CNN.

Nobel Prize Winner Claims World Would Be Better Without Bible

According to Jose Saramago, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature, an atheist and a member of the Portuguese Communist Party:

The Bible is a manual of bad morals (which) has a powerful influence on our culture and even our way of life. Without the Bible, we would be different and probably better people…

Video: Atheist Threatens to Sue Ray Comfort

Dear Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron,

If you look into the legal definition of Hate Speech, the bumper sticker and all the other material that Living Waters Ministries has on Atheists, meets the definition of Hate Speech, and is NOT protected by the First Amendment.

You have until October 20, 2009 to remove all of it, and stick to promoting Christianity only, or I will have a U.S. District Court Judge order you to.

Patrick Greene

You can read Ray Comfort’s post over at Atheist Central. From the comments, and the above video, it appears Patrick does not have the support of many Atheists.
